Repair January 7, 2010 Arnold Moskowitz (NY usa) Geat little netbook as long as it doesn't break. Asus service is the worst I've ever experience. It took 2 months to get a replacement. that one didn't work ,I am waiting 5 weeks for another replacement and all I get is we will call you in three days.
Excellent Product. Well worth the Money! January 4, 2010 Porter Carey (Phoenix, AZ) This is a great little netbook. I have owned this for more than 6 months and have had no problems with it. The keyboard is a great size, and I have fairly large hands. It has been able to handle a larger number of programs than I expected. I added extra memory when I first purchased this product and that did have a very noticeable effect. I would recommend upgrading the memory.
The battery life is incredible. No complaints on this netbook. Great product!!
Netbook Nirvana! January 4, 2010 a_compulsive_reader (New York, NY) I've owned the Asus 1000HE for over 6 months now and have to say I love it. I travel a lot and needed something inexpensive, light-weight, with good ergonomics and great battery life that I could take on the road - this little netbook has met all those criteria and more. The keyboard is beautifully laid out and very comfortable for a touch typist like me. The trackpad is very good with excellent controls - I especially like being able to increase or decrease the screen magnification using the touch controls. It has a nice matte screen (no annoying glare here!) with a sharp, clear and bright display, which brightness can be easily turned up or down with the function keys. Love the Asus superhybrid engine software which allows me to easily change netbook power profile when I need to conserve battery life. Generally I find I am getting 6 hours or so of continuous use even in the highest setting - at last, true all day computing!!! Never seems to get too hot and the fan is fairly quiet. Glossy, dark exterior finish does show every fingerprint - get the white finish if this bothers you as fingerprints don't show much on that one. Port locations are excellent, software extras are useful and well designed - I've used all of them and am very impressed, including the system restore to factory default which works great.
I have no idea how well this netbook performs with 1GB of RAM as I upgraded mine to 2GB before I even booted up for the first time (another big plus is how easy this netbook is to upgrade). With 2GB, this netbook has far exceeded my expectations. It typically boots and is ready to go in less than 2 minutes, even though I have a LOT of software installed and set to run on start up. I originally intended to use this little netbook as an ebook reader, for checking emails, internet surfing, listening to music and to keep up with my tv shows on the road (all of which it does very well), but ended up using it for business purposes as well. I typically run Microsoft Office, antivirus, antitrojan, firewall, sandbox, several security utilities, HP printer utilities, html design program, web browser, musicplayer and a book viewer all at the same time without any problems and with no noticable lags. Wireless internet connection works well and have had no difficulties in connecting to any public or private networks. This little netbook handles checking email, uploading and downloading files, web surfing and music streaming easily - video streaming is sometimes glitchy, especially with high definition tv programs, but I can usually get around this by pausing the video for 15 minutes or so until enough of the video file is cached / downloaded locally to play smoothly. I purchased a light-weight portable dvd player/recorder to go with this (Samsung SE-T084M/RSWD External Slim Slot Load USB Lightscribe DVD Writer (White)) so I can confirm dvd playback works flawlessly - videos display beautifully and sound is excellent through headphones - built-in speakers are adequate in a pinch. Oh, and this netbook makes a great ebook reader. All together, I am very happy with this product and would definitely purchase from Asus again.
My First Netbook December 21, 2009 Kevin C. Giszewski (Indiana) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I needed a computer that was smaller than my 17" behemoth laptop for traveling. I shopped several different models and ended up deciding that the ASUS 1000HE was the best fit for me. After about six months of test driving it, I've decided to share my experience with the world.
Things That Make it Attractive to Me
Case Size - Obviously size matters. The 1000HE isn't too big and isn't too small (10.47" x 7.53" x 1.12-1.50"), however a word about the screen resolution further down.
Keyboard - The keyboard just felt right for my size hands. It is a 'chiclet' style keyboard and the buttons are usable for touch-typing. The button configuration is slightly modified to fit on such a small form factor. Some reviews I read complained of the right-shift key being hard to reach. I don't really mind.
Battery Life - The battery life is supposed to last up to 9.5 hours. This is only possible by stepping down the 1000HE's performance and dimming the screen. I haven't benchmarked this but I have no battery life complaints.
Power Consumption - It has a small dual voltage power supply for traveling. It's power supply only uses up to 36W which is great when compared to the 150W power brick on my other laptop.
Standard Options - The 1000HE has a memory card reader, VGA out and 3 USB ports. Enough ports for what I need it for. The webcam built-in is useful for Instant Messaging video. My 1000HE came with a neoprene sleeve which was nice. Be aware however that some SKU's/models that Best Buy sells are stripped down versions. The 1000HEB model has no bluetooth or neoprene sleeve.
Things That Could Be Better
RAM - I immediately upgraded to 2GB from the installed 1GB. It'd be nice to have it as a standard.
Screen Resolution - The screen height max's out at 600px and I get warnings from software and Ymail saying my screen is too small for optimal use. It's just annoying but nothing too bad.
Touchpad - The buttons are stiff, but I use a separate mouse anyway.
Things To Know About Netbooks
Not Powerful - A netbook won't replace your primary computer for graphic design and game usage. It's ideal for email, [...], surfing the net and using office apps.
No Optical Drives - Having no optical drive can scare some users. Software installs can be easily done by using an external DVD drive, drive emulation software or by downloading installs from the internet.
Operating Systems - I dual boot Win XP and Ubuntu. Newer Netbooks are shipping with Win 7. I find XP very adequate and eventually will probably upgrade when the cost and performance warrant the hassle. I have upgraded the BIOS twice without issue.

Great Netbook December 18, 2009 T. Zeng I've had my 1000HE since May and love it. Keyboard felt natural after a week of use and switching between this and full sized was not a problem. Plays most formats of videos fine if no perfect. A little overclocking and Hulu works decently in Medium quality, smooth in low quality, but quite choppy in high quality.
I would recommend you find the programs "eeectl" and "EeeRotate".
Eeectl WAS an overclocking tool, but it does not work well for the 1000HE (do not use it for overclocking he 1000HE). However it can read the cpu temp and can also allow you to manually adjust fan speeds (The CPU should be able to tolerate higher temperature than the fan allows it to get to in case you need a temporary reduction in noise level). It can also adjust your monitor brightness or dimmness beyond that allowed by the original manufacture. This will help you save more battery in a low light enviornment, or allow you to see better in bright enviornment.
EeeRotate is lifesaver! The EEE comes with a rotating monitor feature by usig the keys Ctrl+Alt+Direction Button. By using a sideways view, you can turn the EEE around and read things while holding the computer like a book (it is light enough for that as well). However, if you do not have the EeeRotate program, the trackpad becomes horribly disoriented. The EeeRotate program changes the orientation of your trackpad to whichever direction need. Asus as of today does not seem to have updated any drivers to handle this yet. A huge design flaw for this feature.
My EEE is running smoothly on Windows 7. Upgraded to 320gb HD and 2gb RAM. I occasionally overclock it to 1.9ghz. Some people have been able to push it much higher than that; upwards of 2.1+ghz I believe.
It seems to still be able to handle over 7 hours of active low intensity usage under Windows 7 after 7 months of light to moderate usage.
