Enjoyable purchase December 25, 2009 a buyer of stuff (earth) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this netbook for 4 month.I have purposely waited to write a review. It works well and is handy. The 6.5 hour battery is a great feature. It does add weight and hangs out a bit at the back but the convenience out ways the bulkiness. The screen is bright and large enough to view easily. It boots very quickly. If used just for light computing its very fast. Please note they do not include a recovery disk with this netbook. You can purchase them from their website or you can purchase an external DVD writer (My pick) and make them yourself. The touch pad is fickle , so you will want to add a real mouse.
As far as reliability I had to send it in for repair.I am an adult and treated my netbook gently but the hard drive failed.I sent it back to ACER ( note YOU pay for the shipping to the repair center. They ship it back after repair at their cost) They repaired it quickly and correctly (replaced the hard drive)
I purchased an external DVD burner to make the recovery discs and play DVD's. I also added a wireless mouse to make a perfect package!
Overall , it's been a great purchase that has given me hours of service and enjoyment.
was great...then December 19, 2009 Shannon C. Leonard (Shannonhb) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Got the Acer Aspire 1 not long after they came out. Was perfect for what I needed. Awesome battery life, light and handy. Then a glitch. About month ago while working away, doing nothing unusual the screen flickered to snow, very quickly and didnt happen again until yesterday. This time it was not quick by any means. Since then it has gotten worse and worse to where now I have nothing but snow. Sucks. Don't know how anyone can fix as you cannot get to anything like icons or settings. Whatever, it was good while it lasted, which wasn't very long at all. And I will not pay hundreds to have it repaired. If I remember correctly when I originally bought it I had to call customer service for some reason and I was passed around to a few different people who BARELY spoke the english language, I believe I was speaking to India, not sure. Just an FYI, maybe you'll have better luck.
so handy December 15, 2009 Rusty Minnis (NH) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not very computer savvy but this is great for me. I keep it beside me when I'm watching TV & I jump on OFTEN to google something or check facebook or ebay. I love this little thing. I bring it outside in the summer to my gazebo. It's the handiest little thing I ever purchased. It's attached to my hip. Love, love ,love it.
Good notebook for travel December 14, 2009 F. Vernet I initially looked for a travel DVD/DivX player to play videos for my daughter during trips (car, bus, ...) but after some search, I was afraid by the quality for low prices products and high quality products have prices closed to a notebook.
So I finally bought this notebook with the benefit (as compare to a single DVD player) to have also an Internet access when I am at the hotel.
Since almost 4 months I get it, I am very satisfied by my choice.
This notebook matches exactly my wishes : screen large enough to see a movie or surfing on Internet, good sound even in a car without headset, very good autonomy (the 6.5 hours are real).
I just miss an external CD/DVD reader to be able to make the CD backup. It would be better if a recovery CD was directly provided. I'll see for my next buy. In any case, a usual USB stick is good enough for file transfer.
Great small computer! December 6, 2009 J. Horst (Columbus, OH USA) I tried out quite a few netbooks before settling on this one. The Acer has, by far, the smoothest and easiest keyboard to type upon. I am a writer, and I'm very, VERY picky about my keyboards.
It came with Windows XP, but I installed Ubuntu Linux on it. Everything works very well under Ubuntu; I highly recommend it as a better alternative to Windows. It boots faster, shuts down almost immediately (by comparison), and except for Firefox (which runs slowly on Linux), I have absolutely no complaints about the performance. I assume it performs reasonably well with Windows XP.
All the features below are in the context of Linux. Windows performance may vary.
* Battery life is quite good. I get a good 4 hours 30 minutes of normal use.
* Wireless networking also works very well.
* The special blue function key took some getting used to, but now it's almost automatic.
* The screen resolution IS small, but I have found it adequate for such a lightweight, portable machine. Video is crisp and clear. I'm not sure if I could work with a smaller screen.
I have used the machine for about 6 months and have had no problems at all. I use an external mouse with a very small USB dongle (I have disabled the touchpad, so don't ask me about that). I also have installed a 16 GB SD HD in the available slot. I also routinely use an external USB hard drive and various flash drives.
This machine is very light and portable and easy to get work done on.
